Outreach efforts

Core to the mission of the Environmental Institute for Golf is creating an awareness of the value golf courses. The resources of education, scholarships, research and environmental programs foster an environment of continuous improvement in the golf course management industry. It is this platform that provides an opportunity to engage policymakers, golfers, media, the environmental community and others.

There was a point in time where golf courses were defenseless to the critics. Limited data and an unorganized effort by the golf industry to engage key constituents left the industry vulnerable. But thanks to support from the EIFG and others in golf the industry, the story is now being told. Utilizing data points regarding revenue generation, employment, charity, green space, environmental programs and water consumption, golf is now in a position of strength to advocate.

Communication platforms

The story is also being shared through numerous communications platforms targeting both golfers and non-golfers. Publications including daily newspapers and magazines, television, radio, digital platforms and social media are now flooding the market place with the advances being made in the golf industry.

From a government relations standpoint, the WE ARE GOLF coalition was created to engage policymakers on the federal and state level. This effort by allied golf associations and industry members tells the story of golf courses as small businesses. Seeking to gain an equal standing with other businesses, there is ample documentation that golf courses are valuable community assets.

One strategy to share the message has been to create “golf days.” For the past four years, golf has traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with federal officials and share our story. Similarly, state golf days are also conducted as golf associations and industry engage lawmakers.
