Whether amateur or professional, all athletic competition derives some level of recreational and economic benefit. However, golf has demonstrated its uniqueness by delivering positive environmental attributes through the venue on which is played – the golf course.

Research has proven that golf courses provide habitat for a diverse selection of wildlife, offer communities green space and act as a step in the purification of water supplies. But golf courses did not become environmental assets by chance. Individuals and groups invested resources so the game could grow and prosper.

Key to this effort is the Environmental Institute for Golf. For 50 years, The Institute has had its focus strengthening the compatibility of the game with nature. The philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), The Institute delivers programs and services in the areas of education, scientific research, information collection and outreach. It does so in a collaboration manner, with numerous other golf organizations and the environmental community.

So what does the next 50 years hold for The Institute? With continued support, it is not hard to envision new grasses that can provide high-quality conditions with less maintenance will be developed; facilities will perform at peak efficiency in terms of energy conservation and waste reduction; and habitat management will provide for an ever more diverse wildlife population on the course. The Institute is positioned to deliver creative and progressive programs that will ultimately lead to measurable environmental targets for developing, building and maintaining golf courses over the next 50 years.
